Traveling to Bagan
There are several ways to travel from Mandalay to Bagan, you can fly, take the Bus or a Riverboat.
The best I think is the Slow Boat which takes about 12-14 hours and costs $10.
There are more luxurious boats but it depends on your travel style and whether you want to meet the real Burmese people or travel alone in luxury or with a bunch of wealthy foreigners.
If you have come this far you may as well meet the people who live here!
The Slow Boat is definitely the way to see the Irrawaddy and meet the wonderful people who live in the villages along its banks.
The boat departs at about 06:00 but you need to be on board about 05:30;
Just turn up early get a ticket and get on board, find yourself a plastic patio chair by the railing and settle down.
There is food and drink available but would avoid the tea and coffee which appeared to be made with water pumped up from the river!!! It took me over a week to recover from this.
The food was fine and you can buy fruit etc. whenever the boat stops to pick up and drop off passengers, beer is always safe to drink and Mandalay Beer is very good.
You will arrive at Bagan in the evening so it may be good to have somewhere pre-booked...............though I didn't!
