Bagan
On arrival in Bagan be prepared to pay the $10 (cash of course) entrance fee which goes to support the regime and is payable at many areas frequented by tourists.
If arriving on the "Slow Boat" you can get a pony and trap to your hotel which is not too far but every dollar you spend with the local people will help them immensely.

Where to stay in Bagan:
There are quite a few Hotel/Guesthouses on the main street of this small riverside town which are cheap and convenient and once you have a place for a couple of nights you can go and explore to see if you can find one better than the one you are in.
Here are a few to keep you going:-
Mya Thida Hotel. Great staff, 20$ a night. (Update from August 2014)
free breakfast (rice and other goodies).
Located in new bagan.
$10 - Pyinsa Rupa Guest House (But probably overpriced by about $5)
Main Road
Nyaung U
(Bagan)
Tel: 061-60607
Well, I stayed here 1 night because it was late, I was hungry, needed a beer and I couldn't be bothered looking around; The owner was very friendly but the place was really not great; cold shower, not too clean; the usual meagre Myanmar breakfast was prepared and served out the back by his children none of whom appeared to be older than 10 years!!!
$13 - Inn Wa Guest House
Main Road
Bagan
Tel:- 061-60902, 60849
From the boat landing this is just after the market on the right, about 800 metres before the Pyinsa Rupa.
Nice little hotel; I reveiwed it on Trip Advisor. The rooms are fine, plenty of hot water once you realise that "Blue" on the tap is HOT and "Red" is cold!!!
They serve a decent breakfast on a very pleasant roof terrace and bicycle rental is available too.
I'd stay here again!
$14 - $30

I had a look at this place and it looked nice; If I had lots of $ cash with me I may have stayed here.
When you have somewhere to stay you can walk or cycle around and see if there are any other places you would like to stay.
Don't forget to visit the market at the bottom of Main Street;
it is small but very interesting; after breakfast is probably the best time.

Pagodas and more Pagodas
I think the best way to tour the Pagodas of Old Bagan is by horse and trap;
If there are 2 - 4 people you can share the cost and it is a relaxing way to travel between the popular and the lesser known Pagodas; Allow at least a day; you could spend months here so maybe take the horse trip first to get some idea of what is where then return another day by bicycle.
This is a wonderful area and for many people will be a once in a lifetime experience so don't hurry, this is a very special place...........aim to be there for sunrise or sunset.
When you have had a fill of Pagodas you should not miss Inle (Inlay).
You can get a bus here from the top of town (Near "Wetherspoons") or
Fly to HeHo (The Airport for Nuang Shwe/Inle) via Mandalay for about $60
HeHo airport is about a 40 minute taxi ride from Nuang Shwe.

Wetherspoons, Bagan

"Wetherspoons" Bagan, Restaurant and Bar, Near Pann Cherry Guest House, 5, Main Road, Bagan-Nyaung U.
