Inle Lake (NuangShwe Town)
Where To Stay:-
N.B. InLay Zone Entrance Fee of $10 payable on entry to the area as your contribution to the regime:
This was August 2014 price.
I particularly like the May Guest House: $12 single
May Guest House
85, Myawaddy Road
Nandawun Quarter
Nyaungshwe
Tel:- 095-081-209417
This Guesthouse is at the far end of town away from the Mong Li Canal area but still only 10 minutes walk. It is run by a brother and sister, she is the local Vet and looks after the Burmese Cats at Inn Paw Khone Village on the lake.
They are a very friendly and hospitable couple who both speak very good English and can advise you on where to go, what to see and how best to get there.
The rooms are clean and pleasant (with thin walls); the private shower rooms are good with plenty of hot water and there is a pleasant garden area where you can have breakfast or a beer in the evening. There are many restaurants only minutes walk away which are ok but better to eat further down the main street at the night market which is busy with a mix of locals and travelers in the evenings.
Here are some others:
Teakwood Guesthouse
I have heard about bad experiences in dealings with the lady owner here ;
due to there being many other places to stay around Inle I would put this establishment way down your list.
There are some wonderful Guesthouse owners in Nyaungshwe so why bother with the ones with an attitude?
Gypsy Inn $15 (Double: August 2014)
82, Kann Nar Road
Win Quarter
Nuang Shwe (Inle)
Tel: 95-209-084: 209-144
Situated right on the canal near the boat landing so very easy to find makes the Gypsy Inn very handy for your trip down the lake; Large pleasant rooms; good hot shower and a good breakfast. On my first visit here when I was only visiting a friend I was offered tea outside by friendly staff; a nice touch.
A nice place but not as quiet as the "May Guesthouse".
Gold Star Hotel $15 (Standard Room): $20( Larger Room)
Corner of Phaungdawpyan Road & Kyautain Road
Nuang Shwe
Tel: 95-081-209-200:
email: [email protected]
I looked at the Gold Star rooms and they seemed fine; the larger room looked like it could accommodate about 4 people so it may end up cheaper than some others for a group. Rooms had hot shower and TV
(You can watch AlJazeera in English in Myanmar but I didn't find any other stations in English!)
This hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the boat landing but as NyaungShwe is a small town nothing is more than a 15 minute walk.
Aquarius Inn $13
2, Phaung Daw Pyan Road
Nom Pan Quarter
Nyaung Shwe
Tel: 95-81-209-352: 209-615
email: [email protected]
Another popular guesthouse about 5 minutes walk from the boat landing: It has a pleasant garden out the front where you can sit and enjoy a beer or two which I did when I looked around: It seemed like a nice place, clean with decent rooms and hot showers.
As with most Guesthouses in Myanmar breakfast is included but always ask. Some breakfasts are little more that a couple of slices of bread and tea others can be more substantial.
On The Lake:-
Golden Island Cottages
My friend Yujin stayed here for 1 night and really enjoyed it;
Click on Yujin to go to her vast website: it will help if you read Korean or just look at the wonderful photos.
She paid $35 per night by booking in town but the website states otherwise:
wonderful sunrise and sunset; good food (Extra of course).
Maybe best to check the prices when in Nyaung Shwe !
UPDATE:- Yujin has informed me that the price has increased yet again,
Decmber 2012 prices:-
single $55 double $65
superior Bungalow:-single $65 double $75
Delxue Bungalow:- single $85 double $85
Bicycle rental:- Turn right out of May Guest house, walk 100 metres to the main road, turn right for 20 metres and across the road is a bicycle rental shop.
The lady here speaks excellent English (she is a teacher); she gave me a map of the area and a printed page of bike tour information and told me about the lake ferry crossing at Mine Tauk down the Eastern side of Inle Lake. You can leave your bike at the forest monastery here, hike up the hill for views of the lake!
The small town of NuangShwe is situated on what looks more like a canal than a river which connects it to Inle Lake.
NuangShwe is a quiet pleasant town which keeps busy with the increasing number of travelers. There are some nice easy cycle rides around the area especially around the lake, if you don't have time to cycle all the way around you can cycle halfway around then take your bike across the lake by boat and cycle back up the other side.
